5-Day Mount Kenya Climbing Itinerary using the Naro Moru Route, one of the most popular and direct trails to Point Lenana (4,985m). This route is ideal for trekkers looking for a shorter climb with stunning alpine scenery, though it involves some steep and boggy sections. It’s commonly chosen for its relatively quick access and descent.
Day 1: Nairobi to Naro Moru Gate – Hike to Met Station Camp (3,050m)
Depart early from Nairobi and drive to Naro Moru town, the starting point of your Mount Kenya trek. After a quick briefing and registration at the Mount Kenya National Park gate (2,400m), begin your hike through dense montane forest. The trail gradually ascends to Met Station Camp, your first overnight stop. The 3–4 hour hike is ideal for acclimatization and introduces you to the mountain’s flora and fauna, including colobus monkeys and giant forest trees.
Day 2: Met Station to Mackinder’s Camp (4,200m)
After breakfast, continue your ascent through the moorland zone. Today’s hike is longer and steeper, taking you through the Vertical Bog, a famously muddy and challenging stretch. Trekking poles and waterproof boots are helpful here. After 6–7 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Mackinder’s Camp, located in the Teleki Valley, with dramatic views of Mount Kenya’s main peaks—Batian, Nelion, and Lenana.
Day 3: Acclimatization and Light Hike around Mackinder’s Camp
To improve acclimatization and summit success, spend a day exploring the area around Mackinder’s. You can take a light hike to Austrian Hut, explore nearby ridges, or rest at camp while enjoying views of glaciers and rugged rock formations. Your guide may offer a short altitude gain hike followed by a return to camp. This day gives your body valuable time to adjust to the elevation.
Day 4: Summit Point Lenana (4,985m) – Descend to Met Station
Begin your summit attempt before dawn. With headlamps and layers, trek up steep alpine slopes and scree fields toward Point Lenana, the third-highest peak on Mount Kenya. Reaching the summit at sunrise is a breathtaking reward, offering panoramic views that can extend to Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. After soaking in the views and taking photos, descend all the way back to Met Station Camp, a long but rewarding descent of around 7–8 hours.
Day 5: Met Station to Naro Moru Gate – Return to Nairobi
Enjoy a leisurely final descent through the forest back to Naro Moru Gate. Your vehicle will meet you for the return journey to Nairobi, where you’ll arrive by late afternoon. Celebrate your achievement—you’ve just summited one of Africa’s most beautiful peaks via the classic Naro Moru Route!
