This itinerary follows the Sirimon–Chogoria route, offering a scenic and affordable way to summit Point Lenana (4,985m), the highest trekking peak on Mount Kenya.
Day 1: Nairobi to Sirimon Gate – Hike to Old Moses Camp (3,300m)
Your adventure begins with an early morning transfer from Nairobi to Nanyuki, a bustling town at the base of Mount Kenya. After a brief stop for supplies, you'll continue to Sirimon Gate (2,650m) where your trek officially starts. After meeting your guide and porters, begin a gentle hike through montane forest and bamboo zones. Along the way, keep an eye out for colobus monkeys and bushbuck. The day ends at Old Moses Camp (3,300m), a basic but comfortable mountain hut where you'll rest and acclimatize.
Day 2: Old Moses Camp to Shipton's Camp (4,200m)
Today's hike takes you deeper into the mountain's unique ecosystems, starting with moorland and continuing across the dramatic Mackinder Valley. The trek is steady but challenging, with stunning views of rocky peaks and giant lobelias along the way. After approximately 6–7 hours, you’ll arrive at Shipton’s Camp, nestled below the towering spires of Mount Kenya’s main peaks. Tonight will be colder, so warm layers are essential.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Shipton’s Camp
To increase your chances of a successful summit, spend an extra day at Shipton’s Camp to acclimatize. Take a light hike to Kami Hut, Obsidian Tarn, or even Hausberg Col. These short excursions help your body adjust to the altitude and offer more breathtaking views of the rugged mountain landscape. Return to camp in the afternoon to rest and hydrate in preparation for the summit push.
Day 4: Summit Point Lenana (4,985m) – Descend to Lake Ellis (3,400m)
Rise before dawn for your summit attempt. With headlamps lighting the way, begin the steep, final ascent toward Point Lenana, the third-highest peak of Mount Kenya and the highest accessible to trekkers. After reaching the summit at sunrise—an unforgettable experience with panoramic views stretching as far as Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day—you’ll descend on the Chogoria route, known for its dramatic scenery. Camp near Lake Ellis, surrounded by alpine meadows and rugged cliffs.
Day 5: Lake Ellis to Meru Bandas (2,950m)
Continue descending through the forest and moorland along the Chogoria route. Today’s trail winds past Nithi Falls and the scenic Gorges Valley, offering some of the most picturesque landscapes of the trek. After about 5–6 hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at Meru Bandas, basic log cabins managed by Kenya Wildlife Service, where you’ll enjoy your final night on the mountain.
Day 6: Meru Bandas to Chogoria Town – Return to Nairobi
After breakfast, take a short trek or 4x4 vehicle transfer (depending on weather and road conditions) down to Chogoria Town, where your vehicle will be waiting. From there, return to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening. Celebrate your achievement—summiting Mount Kenya on a budget-friendly adventure you’ll never forget.
