11-Day Family Safari Itinerary in Kenya

Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi – Gateway to the Safari Adventure

Your journey begins as you arrive in Nairobi, Kenya’s vibrant capital city. After a warm welcome at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you’ll be transferred to your family-friendly hotel or lodge. Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy a leisurely afternoon visiting the Giraffe Centre or the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, where rescued baby elephants charm visitors of all ages.

Day 2: Nairobi to Amboseli – Land of Giants

After breakfast, drive or fly south to Amboseli National Park, famously set against the majestic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. After settling into your lodge, enjoy your first game drive across the dusty plains, where large herds of elephants roam freely. Children will be thrilled by close encounters with giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest. Evening brings storytelling by the campfire under the African stars.

Day 3: Full Day in Amboseli – Tracking Elephants and Big Cats

Spend a full day exploring Amboseli. Morning and afternoon game drives offer opportunities to see predators such as lions and cheetahs, as well as iconic birds like crowned cranes. Visit a local Maasai village to learn about traditional culture and way of life—an educational and immersive experience for the whole family.

Day 4: Amboseli to Lake Naivasha – A Serene Rift Valley Escape

Depart Amboseli and journey north to Lake Naivasha, a lush freshwater lake in the Great Rift Valley. Upon arrival, enjoy a relaxing boat ride among pods of hippos and admire the rich birdlife, including African fish eagles and kingfishers. The afternoon can be spent walking among friendly wildlife on Crescent Island, a unique and safe experience perfect for children.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru National Park – Flamingos and Rhino Encounters

Take a short drive to Lake Nakuru National Park, famed for its vibrant flocks of flamingos and endangered white and black rhinos. Game drives here offer a chance to see Rothschild giraffes, leopards, and baboons. Your family will be captivated by the changing colors of the lake and its surrounding acacia woodlands.

Day 6: Lake Nakuru to Lake Bogoria – A Geological Wonder

Venture further north to Lake Bogoria, a lesser-known gem boasting dramatic geysers, hot springs, and more flamingos. It’s a great destination for older children curious about nature and science. Guided walks around the geothermal landscape provide a fascinating change of pace from the usual game drives.

Day 7: Lake Bogoria to Ol Pejeta Conservancy – A Conservation Haven

Head northeast to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, one of Kenya’s most innovative wildlife sanctuaries. After checking in, take an afternoon game drive to spot the “Big Five,” including black rhinos and chimpanzees at the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary—the only place in Kenya to see these intelligent primates.

Day 8: Full Day in Ol Pejeta – Rhino Tracking and Junior Ranger Program

Spend the day enjoying family-friendly conservation activities. Participate in a thrilling rhino tracking experience or sign up the kids for the Junior Ranger Program, where they can learn about wildlife and earn a ranger badge. The conservancy also offers night game drives for older children and teens eager to spot nocturnal animals.

Day 9: Ol Pejeta to Maasai Mara – Into the Heart of the Wild

Fly or drive west to the world-renowned Maasai Mara National Reserve. Settle into your luxury tented camp or family lodge before heading out for an afternoon game drive. The Mara’s vast open plains are home to abundant wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffalo, and the elusive leopard. The sweeping landscapes and dramatic skies make every moment feel cinematic.

Day 10: Full Day in Maasai Mara – and Balloon Rides

Enjoy a full day exploring the Mara. Early risers may opt for a magical hot air balloon safari (age restrictions apply), followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush. Game drives offer a chance to witness the Great Migration (seasonal), and guides tailor experiences to engage young explorers with fun facts and animal tracking skills.

Day 11: Departure – Farewell to Kenya

After a final morning game drive or leisurely breakfast overlooking the savannah, it’s time to say goodbye.
